History of Dental Assistant Recognition Week

The profession began in 1885 when Dr. C. Edmund Kells recruited his wife as the first “Lady in Attendance” in his dental practice. Later, he hired Malvina Cueria, who became the first professional dental assistant. The role evolved from chaperoning female patients to becoming an essential part of dental healthcare. In 1977, ADAA established DARW to recognize these professionals’ contributions.
