History of National Henry C. Ramos Day

Henry C. Ramos, born in Indiana in 1846, moved to New Orleans in 1887 and opened the Imperial Cabinet Saloon with his brother. It was there, in 1888, that he invented the Ramos Gin Fizz, originally called the “New Orleans Fizz.” Known for its creamy texture and complex flavor, the drink became a sensation, especially during Mardi Gras, where Ramos famously employed dozens of “shaker boys” to meet demand.

Ramos was a strict teetotaler who valued quality over quantity in his bar operations. His last Gin Fizz was served on October 27, 1919, before Prohibition forced him to close his bar. The recipe remained a guarded secret until shortly before his death in 1928.
