History of National Coming Out Day

The day was established to commemorate the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The founders believed that homophobia thrives in silence, and the most basic form of activism is living openly and authentically. What began with participation from 18 states in 1988 grew to include all 50 states by 1990, and has since become an international celebration.
