History of Free Comic Book Day

The idea originated when comic retailer Joe Field noticed increased comic sales during superhero movie releases. Inspired by Baskin-Robbins’ Free Scoop Day, he proposed FCBD in a 2001 magazine column. The first event strategically coincided with the 2002 Spider-Man movie release, marking the beginning of an annual tradition that has given away over 23 million comics to approximately 6.5 million fans.
