History

The National Day of Encouragement was born in 2007 when students at Harding University identified a lack of encouragement as a major obstacle for youth. They launched “The Encouragement Project” to promote positivity. The first proclamation was made by Mayor Belinda LaForce of Searcy, Arkansas, followed by Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe and President George W. Bush officially recognizing the day.

This date was chosen to honor the spirit of support that emerged after the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
