History of National General Pulaski Memorial Day
General Casimir Pulaski was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1745. After fighting against Russian domination in Poland, he fled to France and later joined the American Revolution upon Benjamin Franklin’s recommendation. Pulaski distinguished himself by saving George Washington’s life at the Battle of Brandywine and organizing the Continental Army’s cavalry. Tragically, he was mortally wounded during a cavalry charge at the Siege of Savannah on October 9, 1779, dying two days later.
In 1929, Congress established this holiday to commemorate his contributions and sacrifice. Since then, every U.S. president has issued an annual proclamation for its observance (except in 1930). The day also serves to honor the cultural contributions of Polish-Americans.
