History of Saint Damien Day
Born Jozef De Veuster on January 3, 1840, in Tremelo, Belgium, Saint Damien joined the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. In 1873, he volunteered to serve in the leper colony of Kalaupapa on Molokai, Hawaii. He spent 16 years improving living conditions, providing spiritual care, and advocating for the rights of those afflicted by leprosy. Despite contracting the disease himself, he continued his mission until his death on April 15, 1889. His compassion and courage earned him sainthood in 2009.
